An open letter to Instagram
Instagram is one of the hottest photo sharing apps on the App Store right now. There’s one problem: it doesn’t look that great. At Tapmates, we take pride in our icons and user interfaces, so we decided to mock-up what it would look like if we made it. Keep in mind that this is for personal reasons—Instagram did not hire us to do so.
If you would like to see a better design as much as we do, please Retweet this post and spread the word! Without further ado.
Click the image to view full size or download Retina-ready mockups. Cheers!
UPDATE: We would like to explain what our intention was.

887 days agoExactly my thoughts, the original application makes my eyes bleed when using it.
I wish they would just use a decent design like the one you guys have made.
Cheers.

Would love to see this in the app – it’s really not that beautiful so far

887 days agoAlthough this is an improvement upon the current UI, I feel that Instagram is going for more of the retro look and this really doesn’t fit well into it being candy colored and bright. It is nice looking though, and maybe could be used for an app of your own?

How would the heart and comment icons look with 3 digits? What about places with longer names?

887 days agoOne word: yes.
Tilman
887 days agoVery cool that you not whine about the shortcomings of Instagram’s UI, but make something happen with constructive feedback.
Unfortunately I am a bit disappointed that you left your design changes on the surface. Just changing some icons and textures is not what I would call a “better design”. I use Instagram every day and what I miss is a more telling users profile page and better overview of the feeds. I bet there is much more potential for improvement of this (BTW still excellent) app.
Sergio Bello
887 days agoOh my goodness, this is absolutely fantastic. Color palette is great.
Mason
887 days ago+1 for Tilman.
I was thinking the same thing. Instagram has its shortcomings, but it’s mostly in the functionality. Making something “pretty” doesn’t always make it more functional or easy to use. (although, I’d say that a few of your changes might)
Changing the title bar from worn blue to eye-poping red? That might make it look flash, but I’m not sure how it makes it a better experience for me. And it’s not really in line with their “vintage, worn-out” aesthetic.
CampSteve
887 days agoI like the direction and overall style, but not the color palette – browns, blues, pinks and that bright red (which competes too much with the photos). There seems to be inconsistencies with the color theory.
It’s certainly more polished than what they have now. I’d like to see the comments in the app cleaned up.
Beth
887 days agoI like the thought you’ve put into this but I don’t think the style you’re using for the UI is really fitting with the app or the feel of the photos it generates.
Pat Dryburgh
887 days agoWhile I do believe their app could use a bit more polish, and could benefit from some of the suggestions you’ve made here, it’s also clear that you have completely disregarded the brand that Instagram is currently establishing. As Joshua Blankenship wrote last year,
I look at this post and fail to see the humility or research put into the exercise. If you want to prove your worth as designers, then put your effort towards creating amazing work rather than publicly cutting up the work of others.
jason carlin
887 days agoI really don’t understand this trend of designers publicly undermining products and services they supposedly “like” with this sort of stunt.
I also don’t see any reason that your design is any better than the existing Instagram implementation. Their’s is clean, simple, and allows the content to shine. Yours, while well executed, is over-stylized, adds no new useful functionality, and doesn’t even really iterate on the information layout. It’s a coat of paint.
You do beautiful work — better than mine — but this just seems like an excuse to make some dribbble fodder.

i’m sure the founders are grateful for your work, especially with the attention you are bringing to their product, however, it seems the story of the current instagram design (and brand) is lost in your new “polished” art.
a lot of what makes instagram successful is the *efficient* workflow/interaction, something of which I have advised on for instagram. when you’re proposing a design, it’s important to first understand the current design and respect some of its obvious strengths.
while your design leans on efficiency, it dropped a lot of the efficient interaction, and that’s one of the valuable keys to instagram’s growth.
lastly, the color palette misses on the current brand, and is very similar to Path as others have pointed out. your concern isn’t lost on the instagram team, they care about design just as much as the rest of us, if not more.

887 days agoI actually prefer the minimal look of Instagram.
It’s refreshing having an app which allows you to focus on the most important feature–photos– without textures, drop shadows, shiny gradients, and boatloads of colours getting in the way.
Seth
887 days agoI like the design, I agree colours might be a little distracting but overall it’s much more appealing to me. I really like the idea of having comments hidden until tapped (speech bubble icon), when you are browsing someones feed the comments can easily quadruple the scrolling (not very efficient). And on a side note, the existing popular is seriously lacking you should be able to browse recent.
JBagley
887 days agoI’m a big fan of your work guys, but what are you trying to accomplish by putting this out there?
You pretty much taking a stab at Instagram and trying to prove you are a better bunch of iOS designers than they are. That is probably true, but going about it this way (and asking people to spread the word for a better Instagram design) is a little pathetic.
Did you contact them directly before posting this?
Still a fan!
Jason
Kyle
887 days agoI do agree with Seth that the hidden comments/likes simplifies things and reduces scrolling. IMO, a true redesign involves more things like this: re-thinking which features are available where (for example, adding a “Recent” tab at the bottom). Improving those sorts of details are far more relevant than swapping out some colours.
Jarad
887 days agoAlthough this is a beautiful design, I think it misses the mark by a few hundred yards. As Rob mentioned, you’ve seemed to disregard their brand while eliminating features and adding clunky user interface elements that complicate the app. Clicking to read comments is great, except your brightly colored icons are distracting from the photo. The photo, which is the centerpiece of this app and the reason 99% of users are addicted, has become a secondary element to your own textures, drop shadows, bright colors, and icons.
You guys do amazing work, but understanding a brand and their users should be step one, not finding the best texture for the header.

887 days agoThis could have been done with more style, folks! I was hoping to see a redesign that improves usability and overall experience when using Instagram – not just by being more visually appealing?
If your intention was to bring attention to your site, it’s definitely working though. Brilliant!
Milos
887 days agoYes, this does look good, though I agree with this a bit more, sorry.
Thomas Traddles
887 days agoAnd this is the kind of culture promoted by things like Dribbble.
I’m not even a fan of Instagram, but I can imagine their open response could go something like this:
Dear Tapmates,
Sorry it took us a moment to get back to you – we’re swamped over here! Thanks for spending your free time working on a design for us, but unfortunately we don’t take spec work or unsolicited submissions.
As for your designs, they seem more like decoration. All you really did was embellish what we’ve already got (which seems to be working pretty well!). Also, we’re not a fan of your overused web aesthetics. We don’t think they’ll date very well, and if you haven’t noticed, we’re growing fast and here to stay!
It’s so much easier to point out flaws than make something successful of your own, so we understand why you took this route. However, we’re gonna just keep on keepin’ on!
Best,
Instagram

886 days agoJust because this one has some nice colors, doesn’t mean it’s better. Nice try, guys. Better luck next time!
John
886 days agoSo if you wanted Instagram to be have a better design, you could have also looked for ways for it to be easier or better to use and not just change its colors. C’mon guys, you know better than that. We all know design is not just about “making things pretty”. This was honestly a waste of time. Epic fail.
Robin Raszka
886 days agoHey, thanks for all your feedback, we’ll response soon because we’re swamped over here right now ;-D
Suleiman Leadbitter
886 days agoThere is a new app called Path that I just installed that looks stunning – http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/path/id403639508?mt=8
If they went down that route it would be pretty cool.
I personally believe they need a better online computer/web presence also and even a better iPhone optimised web site also for those without the app that wish to view the images.
Martin
886 days agoIt looks nice but some how misses the low-fi, simple retro kinda thing. I’m with John, I’d prefer them to improve the interaction design first.
Mike
886 days agoWow everyone this is amazing work, stop being such picky and bitch designers putting tapmates down like this.
Jeff Higgins
886 days ago^ Careful, Mike.
Suleiman Leadbitter
886 days ago@Mike – It’s not about putting them down. Design is personal, a preference, a choice. In most cases people don’t know this and just accept what is there. Lay two versions down and you will never ever get a 100% of people liking just one.
So if people prefer the old one, cool, it’s not a problem. The guys here at Tapmates are just saying ‘what if…’
People need to relax, this is just for fun
Jon Rundle
886 days agoI really like the design a lot but I don’t like how you went about this post, especially with saying “An open letter to Instagram” as if to say you’re design sucks and we’re better. I don’t think its fair to their designers to be publicly called out for not doing a design quite how you would like to see it.
Robin Raszka
886 days agoWhy we do that.

885 days agoI think if people actually *READ* the intro of this post, they’d see that the guys at Tapmates did a re-design for FUN and to show how it would look if THEY made it.
Brilliant. Nice work guys. I think I might need you to design something for me…
John
885 days agoI agree with @Jon Rundle.
I understand the Instagram redesign was just for fun. But I don’t think it’s fair for Instagram’s designers to be publicly criticized saying their design “isn’t good enough” and “this is how it should look.” And it’s going to suck all the more for them if some influential or perhaps overrated designer tweets this (like Elliot Jay Stocks who happened to tweet this to thousands of his followers) and all the other “sheep” designers begin to agree.
Robin Raszka
885 days ago@John Hey John, how do you know that it’s not fair? Have you talked to them lately?
Also, what do you think about that, that or that, unfair?
mment
884 days agoYour redesign is awesome, that needs no discussion!
But if I would be the designer of Instagram I would love to hear what you don’t like about my design and why. And why you did it your way. Like this http://www.awayback.com/smashing-magazine-realigned/
Mac Tyler
884 days ago@Suleiman Leadbitter “Design is personal, a preference, a choice.”
Actually, real design has nothing to do with personal preference. I think you may be confusing art and design.
Ricardo Saavedra
879 days agoI personally think that “doesn’t look great” it’s not an argument. I agree with @mment, you should explain with details what interactions of the actual interface does not work.
Excluding the fact, the redesign looks great!
Congrats!
Violet
868 days agoAbsolutely beautiful modification. I understand you don’t want to “step on toes” but sometimes even great designers don’t see the total picture from the beginning.
I love Instagram and this would be a very nice update for them. However, putting together a “protest page” getting people to post and pass around hoping they’ll just do what you want… that part is a little over zealous. lol
