iPad Smart Cover video (uncut)

The current notification system in iOS is lacking to say the least. Only one notification is shown at a time so its not very useful—especially on the lock screen.

The unveiling of the iPad 2 along with Shawn Hickens wonderful redesign sparked our interest in the current system. I had some fun over the weekend and came up with a new look for when the Smart Cover is in place.

Many thanks to Michal, Jindrich and Matej.

The video is available on YouTube and Vimeo and here is a full-size screenshot.

  • It’s a nice idea but there are too many problems with it:

    1. Not everyone will have a Smart Cover;
    2. Even the ones who do will not use it all the time;
    3. The icons rearrange themselves when the cover is taken off, which would be inconsistent;
    4. Most people have more than five apps that need to send you notifications (which is the maximum that can be accommodated in that rightmost column);
    5. You still have to launch the individual apps to take care of the notifications, which is one of the major issues with the current system; and
    6. There are more.

    It’s cute, as far as ideas go, but not really very practical. Nice video-editing though. :)
